HST 220 - African History

This course introduces students to diverse historical perspectives of Africa. It explores social, economic, cultural and political history of Africa since the 16th century when Africa began its relations with European powers. The course examines the political history of the slave trade, colonialism, and post-colonial state building in Africa. It provides students extensive insight into the economic, social and cultural context of ethnicity, conflict, poverty, governance and institutional development in Africa as well as United States policy towards the region. Satisfies the World Cultures General Education requirement and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion requirement.
