NU 320 - Holistic and Complementary Approaches to Health Care This course provides the foundation for knowledge of the basic principles and differences between Western (allopathic) and Eastern (traditional) health care. Examines the differences and similarities of the various forms of traditional healing methods and analyzes current health practices and future trends. In this course, students will keep a journal to document their development through the courses focusing on their growth experiences in mind, body, spirit, and social interconnectedness. The course will introduce the five core values of Holistic Health: 1) Holistic Philosophy, Theories, and Ethics (Relationship centered care), 2) Holistic Caring Process, 3) Holistic Communication, Therapeutic Environment, and Cultural Diversity, 4) Holistic Education and Research, and 5) Holistic Nurse Self-Care. Students will practice skills, develop an understanding of Complementary Alternative Medicine Therapies (CAM). The course content will explore past and current concepts related to the human energy field, underlying Eastern theories practiced primarily in traditional Chinese medicine, use of art as a therapeutic approach to healing, mindfulness meditation and relaxation response, and whole nutrition therapy.
