Reading and Literacy, all grades, Initial Licensure/Non-Licensure (Master of Education)

Those seeking an initial license, who meet the licensure program requirements, follow the specialized Initial Licensure program of study.  Those seeking the master’s, but not the license, complete the Non-Licensure program of study.  The non-licensure master’s does not lead to licensure in the state of Massachusetts.

The Master of Education in Reading and Literacy program prepares candidates to work as reading specialists for all grade levels. This program will prepare candidates who are experienced teachers to obtain Massachusetts State Licensure as a Reading Specialist for all grades (PreK-12). Students must possess an Initial License in Early Childhood, Elementary or Special Education in order to enter the program.

Initial License Program of Study
Prerequisite: an Initial License in Early Childhood, Elementary or Special Education
To meet the licensure program requirements, students must successfully complete all of the required MTELs, coursework, fieldwork, and Comprehensive Examination. Students are required to pass all required MTELs prior to enrolling in the practicum. Students who are unable to meet these requirements can complete the Non-Licensure masters which replaces the Practicum and Reflective with two additional education courses.

Non-Licensure Program of Study
The non-licensure master’s does not lead to licensure in the state of Massachusetts. No MTELs are required in this program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and approach to the process of reading and development of literacy skills
  • Design high quality and coherent instruction, including authentic and meaningful student assessments 
  • Analyze student performance and growth data and to use this data to improve instruction and practice
  • Teach all students through instructional practices that establish high expectations, a safe and effective classroom environment, and cultural proficiency.
  • Promote the learning and growth of all students through effective partnerships with families, caregivers, community members, and organizations.
  • Ensure the learning and growth of all students through ethical, culturally proficient, skilled, and collaborative practice
