Within the School of Sport Science and Fitness Studies, students select innovative majors in athletic training, exercise science, and sport management. Over the last 30 years, the sport science field has evolved into a professional enterprise, and as a result of the tremendous growth, the knowledge base in the sport science disciplines has increased in both depth and breadth. These developments and adaptations within the sports domain are reflected in the interdisciplinary program specializations at Endicott.
With today’s dynamic and changing sports industry, our mission is to prepare students to learn theoretical concepts in the traditional classroom setting and to acquire practical knowledge through the internship/clinical component. Under the direction of the Sport Science and Fitness Studies faculty and staff, students select internship, practicum, and clinical experiences that match their interests, needs, and capabilities.
In addition to experiential learning, a special feature of the curriculum is the thesis component. Students conduct an intensive investigation into an area within their program of study. This serves to further enhance the collaboration between theory and practice.
After completion of specific program requirements, athletic training students are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. Employment opportunities for athletic trainers include high school athletics, college and university athletics, corporate health programs, sports medicine and rehabilitation clinics, as well as professional sports teams. Graduates also pursue advanced degrees in other allied health fields including physician’s assistant and physical therapy programs.
The exercise science major prepares students for the expanding allied-health and fitness industry. Completion of the exercise science major enables students to pursue pre-professional programs (e.g., occupational therapy, physical therapy), strength and conditioning, graduate studies, and applied fitness and wellness opportunities (e.g., corporate wellness, hospital wellness, personal training). Students will also be able to sit for certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Sport management students gain professional expertise through real world internship experiences. They are prepared to utilize their acquired skills in many segments of the industry including intercollegiate athletics, professional/amateur sports organizations, facility management, corporate sponsorship, event planning, and health/fitness management.
