Endicott College offers a Physical Education Program for Teacher Licensure to meet the standards required by the Massachusetts Department of Education. Students who complete this program and pass the state licensing examination (MTEL) will receive a license to teach physical education at two levels: Pre-K through grade 8 and grades 5 through 12.
Admission into the Program
Requirements for admission into the Physical Education Program include the regular admission requirements as outlined in the Catalog and a minimum combined score of at least 1050 on the Critical Reading and Math portions of the SAT.
Those not offered admission into the Physical Education Program upon entrance to Endicott may change into the program when they (1) pass the Communication and Literacy MTEL exam, (2) maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, and (3) achieve at least a C+ (77%) in all physical education courses. Because of the curriculum requirements, individuals interested in changing into the program from another major should work closely with their advisors and the Dean of Sport Science and Fitness to ensure that they are completing requirements in a timely manner.
Continuation in the Program
To continue in the Physical Education Program, students must achieve a “C+” (77) or better in all physical education courses. Students must also have a 2.5 GPA at the beginning of their junior year to be promoted. In addition, students are required to pass the MTEL Communication and Literacy Examination to be eligible to register for the junior year of coursework and to pass the MTEL Physical Education Examination to be eligible to register for student teaching.
Transfer Students
(from another physical education program)
Transfer students from another college or university must present a course description of each physical education course taken and a transcript from the previous program for evaluation by the Physical Education Curriculum Committee. A grade of C+ or better is required for transfer credit to be considered for all physical education courses and science courses.
