History

The study of History enables students to better understand contemporary issues and problems by examining their root causes. Through their coursework, students will come to understand the dynamics of political and social change – the factors, processes, and contingencies that combine to create change over time – and learn about the distinct and intersecting histories of groups in the United States and abroad differentiated by race, gender, ethnicity, class, and culture. History courses offer opportunities for students to hone their communication and critical thinking skills — their ability to weigh evidence, identify and assess competing interpretations of events, develop and sustain arguments. The major offers a flexible program of study, one that provides foundational coverage of the field while allowing students to personalize their program through electives and internships. The major prepares students for professional positions and/or graduate study in a range of fields including but not limited to history, American studies, education, law, government, journalism, editing and publishing, and archives.
