ITS 529 - Fundamentals of Data and Telecommunications Networks(Cr: 3) Explores data communications and computer networks. Topics include network hardware, software, reference models, protocols, digital and analog signals, framing, multiplexing, and fiber-optic communications. Particular focus will be placed upon local area protocols (LAN protocols), to include: Ethernet, IP, UDP, TCP, packetization, encapsulation and circuit switching. Finally, the course will include a theoretical look at error correction, line coding, the Nyquist Theorem, as well as Shannon’s Law, and an overview of networked applications (DNS, FTP, SMTP) with a focus on security. Prerequisite: ITS 529 Mathematical Concepts in Computer Science.
