Earn an M.Ed. in a collaborative, on-line community

The Master of Education in Integrative Learning is a unique three-semester, distance learning program that uses an E-campus accessed by students all over the world. The program was introduced in 1996, utilizing a leading edge delivery system for graduate learning. It promotes both collaborative inquiry and shared meaning. The program fosters the development of a learning community among students and faculty while linking academic inquiry and experiential learning. It is offered in conjunction with The Institute for Educational Studies (TIES), an organization dedicated to integrative and holistic approaches to learning since 1987.

What is Integrative Learning? The root word is from the Latin integratus, meaning to make whole, restore. Integrative learning is a process that transcends the boundaries of traditional education in a search for meaning beyond the separation of disciplines. It incorporates an ecological world view that is interdisciplinary and socially transformative. It compels individuals to develop a systemic approach to teaching and learning – one that addresses the global environmental and the social and political challenges that we are now facing. Throughout the program, students develop practical strategies for designing learning environments that meet the needs of a culture in rapid transition.

Who enrolls? The program has enrolled individuals from many fields including corporate trainers, community college instructors, school administrators, educational consultants, media experts, as well as public and private school teachers from early childhood, elementary and secondary levels. Students enroll twice yearly, in January and July. Students connect to a virtual E-Campus, where they meet other students and faculty in colloquium-based seminars throughout the three semesters. Students are able to schedule their own time on the E-Campus regardless of where they live.

Master’s Thesis

Students complete a Master’s Thesis in a focus area as identified in the student’s Area of Emphasis. Spanning the entire program, the objective of the Area of Emphasis is to deeply engage the student is a meaningful synthesis of integrative learning that culminates in an integrated Master’s Thesis.
