In recent years the world of still photography has gone through immense change, and methods of production and the use of imagery have become increasingly complex. The Visual Communications curriculum in photography strives to provide students with a basis for the critical understanding and production of photographs as a part of contemporary media culture. In their course of study, students are encouraged to explore photography with an emphasis on art practice and exploration of ideas, as well as on the development of imagery and skills for commercial applications.

The curriculum fosters the development of core photographic skills including traditional photo media, digital imaging, studio lighting and production as well as the non-traditional applications of photographic media. The course of study also places an emphasis on the history of photography and criticism to better understand contemporary visual media and the use of images.
