Within the School of Sport Science and Fitness Studies, students select innovative majors in Athletic Training, Physical Education, and Sport Management. Over the last thirty years, the sport science field has evolved into a professional enterprise. Consequently, the knowledge base in the sport science disciplines has increased in both depth and breadth. These developments and adaptations within the sports domain are reflected in the interdisciplinary program specializations.

With today’s dynamic and changing sports industry, our mission is to prepare students to learn theoretical concepts in the traditional classroom setting and to acquire practical knowledge through the internship/clinical component. Under the direction of the Sport Science and Fitness Studies faculty and staff, students select internship, practicum, and clinical experiences that match their interests, needs, and capabilities.

In addition to experiential learning, a special feature of our curriculum is the thesis component.  Students conduct an intensive investigation into an area within their program of study.  This serves to further enhance the collaboration between theory and practice.

After completion of specific program requirements, Athletic Training students are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) Examination . Employment opportunities for athletic trainers include high school athletics, college and university athletics, corporate health programs, sports medicine and rehabilitation clinics, as well as professional sports teams. Sport Management students are prepared to utilize their acquired skills in many settings including intercollegiate athletics, professional/amateur sports organizations, facility management, corporate sponsorship, event planning, and health/fitness management.

The Bachelor of Science in Physical Education offers students concentrations in teacher licensure and exercise science. The Physical Education for Teacher Licensure concentration meets the standards required by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).  Students who complete this program and pass the state licensing examination (MTEL) will receive a license to teach physical education at two levels: Pre-K - Grade 8 and Grades 5-12.

The Physical Education Exercise Science concentration prepares students for the expanding fitness industry.  A number of opportunities exist for those that hold an Exercise Science credential from the American College of Sports Medicine or the National Strength and Conditioning Association.  The Exercise Science concentration will prepare students to sit for examinations offered from these professional organizations.

All students within the Endicott community have the opportunity to complete a Coaching Certification in addition to their major course of study.  Students are required to complete five courses and a coaching practicum.

As we move through the 21st century, career opportunities within sport science will continue to expand.  Endicott’s commitment to a solid academic curriculum and extensive practical training provides students with both classroom and professional experiences necessary for entry into these fields.
