PHL 245 - Modern Philosophy

Surveys Western philosophy from the early 17th century enlightenment through 19th century critiques of rationalism. Readings include selections from major thinkers who have shaped modern conceptions of the self, society, the natural cosmos, and religion. The course addresses philosophical themes such as the dialectic of freedom and nature, the status of political order, and the role of reason in human life. Throughout the course, reference is made to the European cultural, historical, and political contexts in which these modern ideas first arose and circulated. Satisfies the Values and Ethical Reasoning General Education requirement.
